The 2018 BMW X1: An SUV Built to Impress

Car and Driver's reviewers are some of the toughest in the business, consistently averse to handing out compliments as though they were nuggets of pure gold. Yet, reviewer Drew Dorian is making an exception when it comes to the 2018 BMW X1, calling it "quick, nimble, spacious, well built, and undeniably upscale." His overall verdict on the X1? "All hail the boy king: among its peers, the X1 reigns supreme."

That certainly says it all, doesn't it? For any normal car, that snippet might be enough to sell you, but a singular sentence could never sufficiently explain how great the new X1 is. Seriously—it’s that good.

Exterior Styling That Turns Heads

Can BMW do "muscular"? All of us at Germain BMW think so, and you'll agree that the 2018 X1 is both athletic and distinctively “BMW” with its classic twin grilles and glossy headlights. The athletic look is created through the "rib" that runs along its side, erasing any noticeable bulk and creating a sleek-looking physique.

Yes, the X1 looks the part of a James Bond car, and we wouldn’t be surprised to spot Daniel Craig touring some Italian villa in this BMW SUV.

Interior Smarts

The cockpit in the 2018 BMW X1 is all business but in a driver-focused and elegant way.

The X1's infotainment system bundles its technology -- navigation, radio, telephone, and the car's overall systems menu -- under the command of a rotary knob that sits comfortably just below driver's right hand for ease of use. The crisp touchscreen is tilted toward the driver to make it more accessible and user-friendly. Instrument gauges are even clustered and can be read at a glance, which will surely minimize distractions.

A leather-wrapped steering wheel feels as luxurious as you'd expect. Entering and exiting the X1 is a snap thanks to wide doors, and it's also got "best-in-class" head and rear leg room, so even the tallest of your passengers will be comfortable on long treks through Fort Myers or wherever (destinations rarely matter in a BMW this classy).

Thanks to the 2017 X1's standard airbags and optional active safety technologies, we’re confident that the 2018 BMW X1 will also receive rave safety reviews from the NHTSA and IIHS.

Power and Performance

Of course, one of the things that make the BMW brand so attractive is the fact that it is upscale and classy. But when you're in the market for an SUV, you want upscale looks in addition to high-quality performance and unsurpassed utility—and the X1 delivers on both fronts.

The new X1's engine and transmission pairing (220-HP 2.0L 4-cylinder mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission) is a match made in heaven, which is why Car and Driver gave it a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. They've got plenty of praise for the X1 in the driving and handling arena as well, calling the zippy BMW satisfyingly "fun to drive,” especially when they cut into those tight Cape Coral turns.

Another leading automotive review site that also praises the X1 is U.S. News and World Report, whose reviewers had lots to say about the SUV’s performance and polished demeanor. In fact, their reviewers were so impressed with the 2018 BMW X1 in general that they ranked it #1 in Luxury Subcompact SUVs, putting it ahead of rivals like the 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA and Audi Q3!

Did Somebody Mention Utility?

The 2018 BMW X1 has the largest cargo capacity in its segment, beating out some of its biggest competitors. The 59 cubic feet of storage space you get with the BMW X1’s rear seats folded is actually better than the Lexus RX50's 56 cubic feet—with rear seats stowed!  There are bins and cubby holes galore, plus plenty of under-seat storage, too.
