Overview
The BMW 3 Series is still the benchmark when it comes to the world’s best sport sedans. Midseason additions include a hardtop convertible and an all-wheel-drive (AWD) sedan; the coupe gets redesigned in 2008 and is available with an all-wheel-drive configuration. The 3-Series sedan and coupe come as 328i, all-wheel-drive 328xi, and 335i models; an AWD 335xi sedan, and a 2-door convertible in 328i or 335i versions are midseason additions. Wagons are offered as the 328i or 328xi.
Engine and Performance
All models of 3 Series are powered by a 3.0-liter Inline-6-cylinder engine. The 328i and 328xi make 230 hp; the 335i and 335xi are turbocharged and make 300 hp. All models have a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 6-speed Steptronic automatic. EPA estimates of fuel economy averages 20/29 mpg (city/highway).
Build and Styling
The sporty design that distinguishes BMW’s 3 Series carries the signature double-kidney grille and a sculpted, smooth appearance. Clear-lens xenon swivel headlights wrap around corners emphasizing the car's width. Four lines sweep back to the trunk lid, defining the rocker panels and doors. Cabin interiors are vintage BMW with emphasis on driver comfort. Build quality is exceptional, seats are supportive and the dash has simple, neat analog gauges. ABS, traction/antiskid control, and front side airbags are standard; side airbags are standard on all models except convertibles. BMW's Active Steering is standard on all rear-drive models. BMW's iDrive uses a console knob to control entertainment, navigation, communication, and other functions.
